The air was cool and clean within the thick woods. To the right, a gentle waterfall spilled over a low mountain’s edge to gather in a crystal lake at its end. The deep water lay nestled between two mountains’ arms. Brilliant sunlight slanted through tree boles, giving flight to morning’s shadows. To the left lay fields of tall, flower-flecked grass stretching to the trees’ edge. The broad valley swept away into distant climbing hills to the east and west. The high peaks were snow covered. Wildlife roamed freely around the cozy house that stood before them.

It was simple, wooden, and two stories, with many windows to catch the eastern light. Two small gardens were nestled on either side of the front door.

“Please leave your weapons on the porch since you won’t need them here. Come inside and be at home when you’re ready,” said Nirith with a sweep of her arm.

“I’m going to feel naked without my sword,” said Barrett as he undid the belt loop with one hand, supporting Zanora’s weight with the opposite arm. The weapons clanked and jingled as they made a small pile. The prince steadied Zanora’s wobbly walk.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, laying his open palm on her forehead.

“A little weak, but pretty good overall.” She rubbed the spot where the wound had been. A frustrated look came over her as she tapped the side of her head. “I just can’t remember anything except standing there minding my own business. Then…pain.”

“That’s to be expected after what your body has been through,” he replied. “You need—”

“Well, good morning, strangers,” interrupted the door as the companions drew near. “So very nice indeed to see new faces. We rarely get visitors. Welcome. Welcome.” The image was a talking raven.

“Greetings, raven friend,” said Barrett, thinking of Samaren. He missed her a great deal. “You have a lovely home.” Again he used proper manners since ravens appreciated them as much as dragons. Being the wisest of all birds, they enjoyed being treated as such.

As usual, Gaia ran her fingers over the door. The great bird’s face made a caw of delight. “Thank you for having us. It’s a pleasure to be here,” said the witch.

Zanora patted the prince’s shoulder. “I think I can walk on my own now.” She stood upright and tested her legs. “I’m fine.”

Letting go was hard. Barrett enjoyed her body. Her warmth made him wish to hold on longer. But guilt quickly set in. Maybe she blamed him as much as he did for his inability to save her when she needed him most. His stomach twisted again.

He smiled weakly. “That’s great, but if you need me, I’m here.” It was the second time today he felt useless to her.

“Speaking of which, how did we get here?” She pointed to the ground. “I don’t think we were standing in a ring when she moved us. Do you know where we are?”

Barrett shrugged. “Not the exact location. It’s what Elimar does when he vanishes, so we could be anywhere right now.
